Explore Bellingham

Let's Explore Bellingham!

Ah, Bellingham, Washington - the land of rain, hipsters, and endless outdoor activities. If you’re planning to become a resident of “The City of Subdued Excitement”, you may want to get to know its quirks and idiosyncrasies. Here are just a few of the things that make living in Bellingham so unique:

Rain, rain, and more rain. Let's face it, Bellingham is basically Seattle's (much cooler) little sister. And like Seattle, it rains a lot. In fact, it rains so much that if you don't own a good Gore-Tex rain jacket, you might as well just give up and move to the desert. You may think that an umbrella would be a must-have, but trust me, if you use an umbrella, you’ll stand out as a newcomer for sure! Yes, we have a lot of rainy days, but hey, at least all that rain keeps the hipsters hydrated.

You may be interested to learn that the official mode of transportation in Bellingham is a Subaru. If you're driving around Bellingham and you're not in a Subaru, you're doing it wrong. And it's not just any Subaru - it's got to be an Outback or a Forester, preferably with a "Coexist" sticker on the back. Just kidding, obviously, but they are everywhere!

Bellingham is also home to Western Washington University, which means we've got a whole bunch of young, energetic college students keeping us on our toes. They keep the bars lively, the streets filled with bikes, and the thrift stores packed with vintage finds.

Do you enjoy a good IPA? Bellingham is home to some seriously good breweries, and we take our beer very seriously. In fact, we've got a whole event dedicated to it - the Bellingham Beer Week. So, if you're a beer lover, you'll feel right at home here.

But what really sets Bellingham apart is its incredible outdoor opportunities. With its proximity to the mountains and the ocean, Bellingham offers a wide range of outdoor activities that will keep you busy all year round.

Hiking is a favorite pastime of Bellingham locals, and for good reason - we're surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains and forests in the Pacific Northwest. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just starting out, there's a trail for you. From the popular Oyster Dome hike to the more challenging Mount Baker summit, there's no shortage of options.

Mountain biking is another popular activity in Bellingham, and we've got some world-class trails to prove it. Galbraith Mountain is a local favorite, with over 50 miles of trails that range from beginner-friendly to downright gnarly. And with new trails being built all the time, there's always something new to explore.

If you prefer to be on the water, kayaking is a great option. Bellingham Bay offers calm waters and stunning views, and there are plenty of local outfitters that offer guided tours and rentals. Or, if you're feeling more adventurous, head up to nearby Lake Whatcom or Lake Padden for a more secluded paddle.

And of course, we can't forget about skiing and snowboarding at nearby Mount Baker. With some of the deepest snowpack in North America, Mount Baker is a skier's paradise. And with over 1,000 acres of skiable terrain, there's plenty of room for everyone.

All in all, living in Bellingham is a pretty great experience. Sure, we may get a little soggy from time to time, but we've got good beer, good food, and plenty of outdoor activities to keep us entertained. So, if you’re planning to move to Bellingham, head over to REI for your official Bellingham puffer jacket, and the rest of your outdoor gear. And don’t forget to bring your sense of adventure!
